According to a Statistics Canada report Quebec counts approximately 7 744 500 inhabitants, a growth of 0,18 % during the first quarter of 2008. This is the strongest growth for the same period (first quarter of the year) since 1992.
The birth rate is still climbing in Quebec and has reached its highest level during a first quarter since 1998. The number of births noticed during the first three months of 2008 is the highest for a first quarter since 1995. Concerning its international migratory balance Quebec has obtained its best result since 1989 during a first quarter.
However, the strongest demographic growth in the country has been noticed in the West, whereas for the whole of the Canadian territory 53 100 new immigrants have been welcomed since the beginning of the year, i.e. 5 300 more than in the same period last year.
On the 1st of April 2008, the Canadian population was estimated to be at 33 223 800 inhabitants, an increase of 80 200 relative to the 1st of January 2008.
