The Pitfalls of Fall and Winter Driving

The Pitfalls of Fall and Winter Driving

Fall scenery can be spectacular, but the season’s first cold snaps can catch you by surprise and cause problems if you don’t adjust your driving methods. The roads may be clear, but wet leaves and frozen water puddles are slippery. Braking suddenly on a wet or frozen surface can send you straight into the ditch!

The 3 second rule

To check if there is sufficient braking distance between your vehicle and the one in front, pick out a landmark on the side of the road and note when the car in front of you passes it. Then count how many seconds it takes you to reach that same landmark. If it takes three seconds or longer, you are driving at a safe distance. The golden rule all year round is to avoid following the car in front of you too closely.

Danger: slippery when wet!

If a layer of water comes between your tires and the road, you could aquaplane. If this happens, whatever you do, don’t brake! Take your foot off the accelerator and hold the wheel firmly. As soon as you feel your tires regain traction, return the car to its original course.

Controlling a slide

  • Put the gear shift in neutral.

  • Turn your wheels in the direction of the slide without jerking the steering wheel.

  • Be prepared to straighten the vehicle again to avoid sliding in the opposite direction.

When it rains

  • Slow down, especially on curves.

  • If you have to drive through puddles, check your brakes (lightly!) immediately afterwards.

Get ready for winter!

You never know what to expect during the winter: frozen roads, snowstorms, and whiteouts mean you have to be ready for anything. Have your car fully tuned up and check the state of your tires and brakes. Remember to put a shovel, snow brush, sandbag, traction mats, and gas line antifreeze in your trunk. And get in the habit of keeping your gas tank full.

After a snowfall, clear off your vehicle completely before using it, including the head and rear lights and turn signals. Before heading out on a long trip, find out about road conditions and weather. A prepared driver is a good driver!
