Regular reminders to tenants: Prevention is better than cure!

Regular reminders to tenants: Prevention is better than cure!

1) Wipes in the toilet

It is important that your tenants put cleaning wipes, whether for baby, personal hygiene, etc., as well as cotton swabs and sanitary napkins in a trash can! They should never be thrown in the toilet. Wipes thrown in the toilet may clog your wastewater system or cause a sewer backup in your building. In fact, they can block the check valve that protects your building from sewer backups, which can cause considerable damage.(1)

Here is an example of a poster and/or e-mail that you could display/send to your tenants:

Dear residents,
In this time of coronavirus, it is important to remind that disinfectant and cleaning wipes, (of all brands, whether for babies or for sanitizing) SHOULD NOT BE THROWN IN THE TOILET.
Throwing these wipes in the toilet can clog the pipes.
Thank you for throwing them in your trash can after use.
Thanking you for your collaboration and understanding.

2) Heating the housing

Tenants heat their dwellings in the winter, but not all in the same way. Some are hot, others cold, and others want to limit their spending for vacation.

As landlords, it is your role to raise awareness! Some tenants do not realize the consequences of frozen pipes. So, as soon as they sign the lease or collect their rent in October, remind them that if the heating is turned off, the water can freeze, then the pipes burst and water damage that will cost them several thousands of dollars will be their responsibility.

A simple reminder can change everything!
