“Larger than a prison cell but smaller than a mobile home”: that is the description given by Daily News of the “micro-apartments” of which Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City, has made himself the promoter yesterday in order to solve the shortage of affordable residences for young single people and for couples without children who want to settle in New York City.
Mayor Bloomberg launched yesterday an invitation to tender for the construction of “micro-apartments” of less than 30 m², with an integrated kitchen and bathroom, in a rental building of the Kips Bay district in Manhattan. “People from all over the world want to live in New York City, and we must set up a new evolutionary model of habitat, which is without risk, affordable and innovating, to meet their needs”, he said at the presentation of his pilot project.
The monthly rent of such an apartment should be lower than 2.000$, according to municipal people in charge.
