The official start of green waste collection for the citizens of Montreal was given by the person responsible for sustainable development and mayor of the borough of Saint-Laurent, Alan DeSousa. Boroughs such as Rosemont, La Petite-Patrie, and Anjou already offer such a service to their tax payers, and on the 1st of September, the borough of Saint-Laurent will follow. Later-on, this fall, the other boroughs will also offer this service.
Green waste collection is part of the Waste Management Plan in the Montreal agglomeration which has been made public last April.
« This new service of selective collection now allows the citizens of Montreal to recuperate their green waste, in spring time and in the fall, thereby avoiding total elimination. The collection of green waste will contribute to attain the objectives of the Quebec policy of waste management from 1998 to 2008 », Mr. DeSousa has said.
Accepted green waste are horticultural cleaning waste and waste from other landscape maintenance works, waste from terrain clearing, waste from the vegetable garden and from fruit bearing trees and from small branches. It is put on the side of the street, on the same spot as household waste.
