Bill 65, An Act to limit lessors’ right of eviction and to enhance the protection of senior lessees: The Government is using the wrong means

Montreal, May 22, 2024 --- The Association of Quebec Landlords (APQ) believes that the Government is using the wrong means with Bill 65, a law limiting the right of eviction of landlords and strengthening the protection of senior tenants.

A Bill tabled only three months after the adoption of Law 31 on February 21st, 2024.

"A Bill that should have been postponed in our opinion. Indeed, Bill 31 was adopted 3 months ago, not 3 years ago.... We do not even yet know the impacts of the restrictive and punitive measures that have been adopted." According to Martin Messier, president of the APQ.

The APQ agrees that seniors must be helped and also accompanied. However, we believe that financial assistance should be granted to them, and not just housing measures. Elderly people must also be able to feed and clothe themselves adequately.

"It is unfortunate that homeowners are the only actors in society aware of such measures. Corporate citizens and food distribution chains could also be made available." added Martin Messier.

This new law applies to all owners in Quebec. This tarnishes interest in residential real estate investment by sending a message that building owners are the only ones involved when it comes to taking care of the most disadvantaged people in our society.

The Association of Quebec Landlords (APQ) will submit a brief and recommendations as part of Bill 65.
